We spent a day at Country Village....it was like summer....63 degrees. Maicey loves to shop thru the antique stores. She picked out several things she wanted to add to her Christmas list.

Mr Rooster and his Hen were out enjoying the sun. Maicey likes to look for chicken poop....this is the place to find it.... that's for sure.

The wisteria bushs were in bud....that is a gigantic pile of snow in the background next to the hotdog stand.

When we got home from Country Village the girls had a session at the.................. WACK AND YAK.....

I took a photo while we were on our trip to Glacier National Park and there were no buffalo roaming. It was beautiful to look out on the prairie and imagine millions of buffalo running across the plain. The clouds that day were boiling up over the mountain range and it all ended up working well to make a great painting.

Eating Black Eyed Peas.............

A New Year's tradition of good luck.

Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is thought to bring prosperity.

The peas, since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity; the greens symbolize money; the pork, because pigs root forward when foraging, represents positive motion.
Another suggested origin of the tradition dates back to the Civil War, when Union troops, especially in areas targeted by General William Tecumseh Sherman, typically stripped the countryside of all stored food, crops, and livestock, and destroyed whatever they could not carry away. At that time, Northerners considered "field peas" and field corn suitable only for animal fodder, and did not steal or destroy these humble foods

In the Southern United States the peas are typically cooked with a pork product for flavoring (such as bacon, ham bones, fatback, or hog jowl), diced onion, and served with a hot chili sauce or a pepper-flavored vinegar.

So… like where do you buy hog jowls?? I remember we always ate black eyed peas on New Years Day. Mother made them with salt pork and we used pickled pepper vinegar. They really aren't too bad to eat but not a favorite. Now we buy a can at the grocery store and eat a couple of spoon fulls as a tradition. Maybe we should cook up some this year and eat a bunch as we could use as much prosperity as possible.

We did a 17 mile bike ride....yes, we really did it. The old Hyawatha Trail. Used to be the railroad tracks for the train from Chicago to Seattle. It was all down hill so we didn't have to pedal too much. The 2 mile long tunnel was a challenge. Carol hit the wall and Linda quit and walked it.
Overall it was a great time.

Katie refinished the settee(went into labor and Poppa got to help finish it up).
100 year old set from Sears and Roebuck.
Original cost of $20.00; for a 5 piece set--two chairs/settee and two foot stools.
The settee is now in Maicey's bedroom. That is recycling.

The settee and chair came with Linda's grandmother and grandfather from New York City, after they had immigrated to the USA from Sweden (Carl and Natalie Swenson). We had the set for 43 years and now Katie is going to refinish the wood and put new upholstery on them. They will be used in Maicey's bedroom. With a new baby coming Maicey will be getting a trundle bed and the crib will move to the new babies room. The settee and chair will be cute in Maicey's big girl room.

I actually remember when it was dangerous to eat SPAM...not because of the fat and animal parts made up SPAM but because you had to open the metal can with a key(the key was welded onto the bottom of the can). The key wound around the top and you ended up with a strip of sharp metal, that wasn't enough....then the edge of the can was like a razor blade. After you finally got it open then you had to get the SPAM out and then Mom would slice it up and fry it in the black cast iron skillet.

The Blackhawk Waltz is a favorite old family waltz. I remember my Aunt Attice playing the waltz many many times. I made it a point to learn to play it also and it inspired me to paint this angel. Ragtime is the true american original music that inspired jazz/blues and rock and roll. Bohemia and Pineapple rag are very famous ragtime piano pieces also.

While on the bus trip in Glacier we spotted this young grizzly bear cub going thru the bushs. It was a cute little guy.....as long as we were in the bus.

Going to the Sun

Avalanche Shute ....better know as a bear refrigerator. After the avalanche of snow any animals in the way are frozen and in the spring when it thaws out the bears are waking up from hibernation and go check out the avalance shute for snacks.....

Mike/Linda/Carol at the Sun. The mountain behind us is call Sun Mountain. That is why the road in Glacier Park is called Going to the Sun.....makes sense....right.

This is the view out the window on the Red Bus trip going to the sun. The road was very very narrow and it was a long long long long way down. The road was literally carved out of the side of the mountain. This valley was carved by a glacier 100,000 years ago. There are actually only 10 glacier left in the park. To be a glacier the snow must be 100 + feet thick, the glacier must be 125+ acres in area or larger and it must be moving. They figure there will be no glacier left in the park by 2020. Needless to say the scenery was spectacular in the par.

Glacier National Park......Red Bus

1936 Tour Bus.....refurbished in 2004. It is acutally a wooden body....we had to close the doors very carefully. The top was canvas and could be opened or closed if needed......stop get out roll out the canvas and fasten then later stop get out and roll up the canvas. It was a spectacular way to view the park.

Don/Carol/Linda at the McDonal Lodge.

The driver of our bus was Jody. A college student that works in the park during the summer. The park opened July 13th and will close the middle of September. They had a huge snowfall over the last winter. I would recommend the bus ride as we learned all about the park while being able to view the sites....even had wool blankets on the ride back.

The top of the pass is Sun Mountain. The road through the park is called Going to The Sun Road. We say great horn sheep/mountain goats and even saw a grizzly bear on our tour to the top of the pass. During last winter the snow at the pass was over 100 feet deep. Many more winters like that and there may be some new glaciers in the park.

This is a modern day stile used to make whiskey. We usually drink bourbon but we liked the rye whiskey and bought a couple of bottles. Makes a wonderful basil mint mojito.

Hot Day at Marmor's house

Watermelon What?

Watermelon Salad

6 cups of cubed watermelon, seeds removed (about 3/4 of a small, seedless melon) - or you could make melon balls for a fancier presentation
1/4 cup diced onion – I used fresh-from-the-farmers-market green onions but any onion is fine
1/2 cup diced or crumbled ricotta salata – the original recipe most often called for Feta and a crumbly blue would work nicely, too
1 Tbsp chopped fresh mint
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp fresh-squeezed lime juice
1/8 tsp chipotle or chile powder
Gently toss the watermelon, onion, cheese and mint together. In another bowl mix the olive oil, lime juice and chipotle powder together. Just before serving dress the watermelon with the olive oil mixture.

Watermelon Cocktail

2 oz Watermelon juice (as made above)
1 oz Fresh-squeezed lime juice
2 – 3 oz Chilled vodka
1 tsp superfine sugar or simple syrup
Add all ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigorously for about 1 minute until the ingredients are thoroughly chilled.

Pour into a chilled martini-style glass. Enjoy!

You may need to adjust the lime juice and sugar based on the sweetness of the watermelon and your personal taste.
